"I believe in my heart that faith in Jesus Christ can and will lead us beyond an exclusive concern for the well-being of other human beings to the broader concern for the well-being of the birds in our backyards, the fish in our rivers, and every living creature on the face of the earth."
- John Wesley, founder of Methodism
Some of the major challenges facing all life on Earth in the 21st century include environmental damage and the depletion of our planet's natural resources. As part of our drive to help ACSians become young men of character who respect others, themselves, and the environment; and to help educate and equip them to deal with the environmental challenges that their generation will face, the school, with help from the Parents' Support Group, has been running the 'ACS Recycling as a Lifestyle 2011' programme in which students recycle paper, plastic and tins using the classroom recycling boxes.
We are pleased to announce that in addition to collecting paper, cans and plastic, we are now adding used cooking oil to the list of materials we collect for recycling. We are working in partnership with Alpha Biofuels, who will collect the used cooking oil and recycle it into biodiesel, which can be used to fuel diesel engines without any modification to the engines needed. Biodiesel produces less air pollution than diesel made from crude oil, and it comes from a renewable source of energy – solar energy trapped by plants.
If you wish to support this aspect of our recycling programme, please save your unwanted used cooking oil in an old plastic bottle and give it to your son to bring on the collection date (the date will be announced nearer the time). Alpha Biofuels will recycle the plastic bottle as well as the cooking oil.
In case you would like to learn more about Biodiesel, below are some YouTube video clips about Alpha Biodiesel, an interesting documentary entitled "Fuel", and useful links:

The Fuel Film, by Josh Tickell (2008) (duration: 1 hr 52 mins)
YouTube Description: "Director Josh Tickell takes us along for his 11 year journey around the world to find solutions to America's addiction to oil. A shrinking economy, a failing auto industry, rampant unemployment, an out-of-control national debt, and an insatiable demand for energy weigh heavily on all of us. Fuel shows us the way out of the mess we're in by explaining how to replace every drop of oil we now use, while creating green jobs and keeping our money here at home. The film never dwells on the negative, but instead shows us the easy solutions already within our reach."
